Red fox

Fox of the cities and fields

Although commonly found in rural areas, the fox can also adapt to urban environments. Otherwise, it typically occupies badger burrows. It may also dig its own burrow, which always includes escape routes.

Depending on the availability of prey, the fox lives alone, in pairs, or in groups. It becomes nocturnal in areas where it is hunted.

Did you know?

Thanks to a wildlife vaccination program, fox-borne rabies has been eradicated in France since 2000. However, echinococcosis, caused by a small parasitic worm that attacks the liver, is still present. Therefore, you should avoid eating wild berries, cook garden vegetables thoroughly, and avoid touching live or dead foxes

Food

It feeds mainly on rodents and can eat as many as fifty a day. It also eats berries, fruit, earthworms, and insects, and is often found at landfills, manure piles, and trash cans.
